Liquid Cooling for PC Builders: AIO Sizes, Fitment & Mistakes
Liquid cooling is the most misunderstood purchase in PC building: half the internet says you need it, the other half says it will flood your motherboard. Both are wrong. The short answer: an AIO (all-in-one) liquid cooler makes sense for sustained 250 W+ CPUs, height-limited cases, or the clean look — pick 240–280 mm for gaming chips and 360 mm for high-core-count parts, verify your case's radiator support before checkout, and mount it with the tubes low so the pump is never the highest point in the loop. That last sentence prevents most AIO failures ever posted. Here's the full picture.
First: do you actually need liquid?
We said it in the air cooling guide and it stays true here: a good dual-tower air cooler lands within a few degrees of a 240–280 mm AIO on most CPUs, for less money and with nothing to pump or leak. Liquid earns its place in four scenarios:
- Sustained flagship loads. A Ryzen 9 or Core Ultra 9 holding 250 W through hours of rendering is where a 360 mm radiator's extra surface area genuinely pulls ahead.
- Clearance-limited cases. Big towers need ~165 mm of height; slim and SFF cases often don't have it, while a radiator tucks against a panel.
- Heat management. An AIO exhausts CPU heat directly out of the case instead of dumping it inside for your GPU to breathe — relevant in hot rooms and dense builds (see the airflow logic in our case guide).
- Aesthetics. An unobstructed view of the board and RAM is a legitimate reason — just an aesthetic one, priced accordingly.

The underrated reason to size up isn't temperature — it's noise. The same 200 W spread over a 360 mm radiator needs far lower fan RPM than over a 240 mm. As with case fans, bigger and slower beats smaller and faster; a 280 mm with 140 mm fans is a quiet-build sweet spot many people skip straight past.
Also glance at radiator thickness: most are ~27 mm, but thick 38 mm variants exist and change what fits where — which brings us to the part everyone skips.
Case compatibility: the five-minute check that saves the build
"Supports 360 mm radiator" on a case listing is the beginning of the check, not the end. Open the case's spec page and manual, and verify:
- Which mounting spot supports your size. A case may fit 360 mm in front but only 240 mm up top, or vice versa. The mount location matters for tube orientation (below).
- Top-mount clearance vs your motherboard. Radiator + fans is ~55 mm hanging down from the top panel. On many mid-towers that overlaps tall VRM heatsinks or RAM. Case manuals list top clearance; low-profile RAM dodges the issue entirely.
- Front-mount vs PSU shroud and GPU length. A front radiator eats 55–75 mm of interior depth — check your GPU still fits behind it. Some shrouds also need a cutout for front-mounted rads.
- Tube length vs case size. AIO tubes run ~400–450 mm. In full towers, a front-bottom mount can leave tubes stretched taut to the CPU — awkward at best.
- Fan header / USB needs. Three fans plus a pump need somewhere to plug in; RGB/LCD models often also want an internal USB 2.0 header, which small boards may have only one of.

Mounting: the tube rule that prevents most failures
Every AIO ships with a small air bubble inside — it's normal, it allows for expansion. Air rises to the loop's highest point, and the one place it must never sit is inside the pump: a pump chewing air rattles, cools poorly, and dies young. One rule follows:
The pump must never be the highest point of the loop. Top-mounted radiator: always fine. Front-mounted: fine, ideally with tubes entering at the bottom. Radiator mounted below the CPU block: wrong, however clean it looks.

The common mistakes — a field guide
- Pump as the high point — covered above; it's the #1 cause of "my new AIO is rattling and my temps are terrible" threads. If you hear gurgling on first boot, tilt the case gently to chase the bubble into the radiator.
- Pump plugged into the wrong header. The pump belongs on
AIO_PUMP(orCPU_FANset to full speed); the radiator fans go on fan headers with a normal curve. A pump on a temperature-controlled curve runs slow when idle-hot, and some boards refuse to boot with an emptyCPU_FANheader. - Plastic film on the coldplate. Same rite of passage as air coolers — instant 90°C+ on a fresh build means check this first.
- Radiator fans fighting the case. Decide whether the radiator intakes or exhausts, and orient all its fans the same way, consistent with the case's front-to-back flow. Front-mount = usually intake; top-mount = usually exhaust.
- Expecting total silence. AIOs move fan noise away from the CPU but add a pump — a faint hum or whine at full speed is normal. If noise is the whole goal, a big air tower or a 280/360 mm at low RPM is the quieter route.
- Buying a 360 mm for a 65 W CPU. The efficiency argument from our CPU guide cuts both ways: an X3D gaming chip doesn't produce enough heat to justify flagship cooling. Put the difference toward the GPU.
- Ignoring the lifespan clock. Fluid slowly permeates out through tubing over years and pumps wear. Quality units are rated 5–7 years — buy the warranty length (5–6 years signals a serious unit), and treat a 10-year-old AIO in a rebuild the way you'd treat a 10-year-old PSU: with suspicion.
- Custom loops as a first liquid project. Open loops are beautiful, expensive, and a maintenance hobby — fittings, draining, coolant changes. Build with an AIO first; graduate later if the hobby calls.
