How to Choose a PSU: 5 Things That Actually Matter

The power supply is the one part of your PC that can take everything else down with it — yet most builders pick it last, on price alone. The short answer: buy a unit with 20–30% wattage headroom over your system's peak draw, an 80 Plus Gold rating, native ATX 3.x connectors if you have a modern GPU, and a 7–10 year warranty from a proven platform. Here's why each of those matters, and how to check them in under five minutes.

1. Wattage — with headroom, not overkill

Start with what your system actually draws, not the number printed on your GPU's box. A typical mid-range gaming PC (Ryzen 5 / RTX 4070 class) peaks around 450–500 W under real load. Add 20–30% headroom on top of that peak and you get your target: roughly 650–750 W for that build.

The Bronze-to-Gold price gap is small and pays for itself in electricity over a few years of gaming — faster still at European energy prices.
